Section 6: Getting an IDT Position and Succeeding at It

Begin your post for this week with some background: what is your current job, what program are you enrolled in, what brings you to that program, and what do you expect when you graduate (change jobs? obtain a promotion?)

Well, I am currently a 3rd/4th Grade Writing teacher in the FWISD. I enjoy teaching my students. Before teaching 4th grade I taught 2nd and 3rd grade and I knew that when I started teaching 4th I wouldn't enjoy it because they were much older.Boy was I in for a surprise I love 4th grade! Now it's the 3rd graders that are the booger bears.I am currently enrolled in the Educational Technology/ Library Science program here at TAMU- Commerce. Upon graduation I plan on becoming an Elementary School Librarian. I would love to stay within my district however, if that doesn't happen I'm open to trying a different school district. I'm so excited about the new opportunities  and can't wait to have my own library for all students to enjoy.

Next, describe the kind of work that you want to do and the type of organization or institution in which you want to work. Use the WorkMatrixTM in the chapter titled “Getting a Job in Business and Industry” to help organize your thoughts. Do you most desire first, second, third, or fourth level service? Or would you rather design or develop instruction? What features of work are important to you? What economic sector do you want to work in?

Like I previously stated my goal is to work in an Elementary School Library within an ISD. So most of this question doesn't apply to me because I haven't a clue when it comes to designing and developing instruction except for what I've learned so far in this class. Although IDT seems interesting,my area of expertise if you will lies in Library Science.

Based on these intentions, explain what you need to learn. What skills and qualifications do you need? Will you obtain the skills you need in the required courses in your program? What electives might you need to take to help you develop skills specific to your aspirations?

To obtain a job as a public school librarian I would need to be proficient in technology as well as all of the various aspects of the library. The librarian on my campus is the TIE for She assists everyone on  campus when something goes wrong with the Promethean boards, computers, laptops, remotes, ELMO's (document cameras) or anything else that deals with technology in the building. She works closely with the EdTech department and I imagine that is something that I may have to do on the campus I am at. I feel like with most of the technology courses I have taken so far with assist me with these skills. The Library Science classes I have taken will definitely help.

Finally, what organizations would best support your continued learning after you graduate? Do you think you would benefit from joining those organizations before graduating? Explain why or why not?

If I could join any organization it would probably be the American Association for School Librarians. They seem to lend alot of support for members and have plans in place to assist in being an excellent librarian. They have professional development, resources, as well as other committees you could belong to to assist you. I believe I would benefit from being in this organization before and after graduation they have options for Parents as well as students to get involved. It may not be as beneficial for me right off but I think being apart early may give me some insight on what I can do as a librarian.I know when I graduate it would help me greatly.

  1. Tyeanna,
It seems like you will be a great librarian. You have great energy and a true passion for your students. Once upon a time, I wanted to be an elementary teacher BUT I soon found out that I prefer the older kids. :-) Good luck with everything!

  2. I was intrigued by your comment about your librarian being a "TIE" on campus. I think that's great that they are on campus to help you with all of your technology. As of right now, our librarian does not do anything related with technology. Therefore we always have to call a technician to come out and assist us. I think a librarians role should include technology assistance.
